Greening Algoma Steel

January 9, 2025

A Case Study

This case study of ‘greening’ steel at Algoma Steel Inc. highlights important technical, economic, labour policy and management factors which must be considered in creating successful outcomes for all stakeholders.

Algoma Steel Inc. (Algoma) is one of Canada’s largest steel
manufacturers and the most significant employer in the City of Sault Ste. Marie (The Soo) in Northern Ontario. This paper is a case study of the plant’s latest modernisation efforts focusing on greening of plant operations, and its related workforce development initiatives in achieving sustainability goals and long-
term financial viability to the benefit of the local community and region. It should be of interest to companies seeking to green their operations, policy-makers at all levels of government, plant
engineers, environmental and safety workers, NGOs delivering training, human resources personnel, academia and post-secondary students.
